SymbioBeer Project No.1 Limited Edition Beer Launched for Christmas 2020!

Irish Manufacturing Research is delighted to announce that SymbioBeer Project No.1, a limited edition “BreadBeer”, is now available to buy online from St Mel’s Brewery’s Online Shop.

Symbiobeer Project #1 BeerSymbioBeer Project No.1 is the result of an EPA Ireland Green Enterprise, an annual circular economy funding programme, innovation demonstration project between St Mel’s Brewery, Panelto Foods and IMR called SymbioBeer. It demonstrates that surplus bread can be used as a substitute for virgin malted grain in beer production.

Reusing excess materials is a key principle of industrial symbiosis and a circular economy model. The circular economy is a new way to design, produce, and use goods. Circularity seeks to reduce waste at all stages of the economic cycle and ultimately ensure materials are used as efficiently as possible.

The SymbioBeer project coordinated and facilitated by IMR has focused on uncovering valorisation and new product development opportunities from waste by-product exchanges between St Mel’s Brewery and Panelto Foods. As part of this project, Irish Manufacturing Research is also exploring the wider industrial symbiosis opportunities in the Longford area and will develop policy recommendations to inform the scale-up of industrial symbiosis in Ireland.
