A Look Back at IMR’s November Industry Members Network Event 2024

On November 28th, 2024, Irish Manufacturing Research (IMR) hosted its highly anticipated Industry Members Network Event at the Mullingar Pilot Lab. With over 140 onsite representing over 80 companies, the sold-out event maximised capacity and created an atmosphere buzzing with innovation, collaboration, and insight. The IMR Industry Members Network Event brought together manufacturing leaders, innovators, and industry stakeholders to explore cutting-edge technologies, share best practices, and foster meaningful connections. The day’s agenda featured seven expert-led workshops and 12 live technology demonstrations, providing attendees with actionable insights and hands-on experiences to take back to their organisations.

IMR’s purpose—to build resilient manufacturing enterprises and develop the professionals of the future—was at the heart of every session. Attendees had the chance to experience IMR’s state-of-the-art pilot factory and explore its extensive research portfolio.

Practical Design of Agile, Redeployable Automation
Key Takeaway: This session, presented by Tim Commane from Douglas Automation, focused on practical applications and technologies that enable agile robotics and automation, equipping manufacturers with tools to start their automation journey today.

Understanding Digital Transformation
Key Takeaway: Highlighting the challenges SMEs face in a high-cost economy, this session showcased Dromone’s transformation journey and introduced IMR’s upcoming funded Cluster Program in 2025. Speakers included Nick Rowe (IMR’s Commercial Director), Gael Beaulieu (IMR’s Senior Smart Industry Assessor), and Padraig Brosnan (Dromone).

Delivering Sustainable, Customer-Centric Business Model Innovation
Key Takeaway: This workshop, featuring Ian Machan from the Advanced Services Group, emphasised the importance of holistically understanding customer business models to identify areas for value-added services.

Gen-AI Applications in Manufacturing
Key Takeaway: Carlos Garcia, IMR’s Head of AI Strategy, explored AI fundamentals, large language models (LLMs), and real-world use cases in manufacturing, sparking significant interest. Sean Ryan from Thormac noted, “It was the first time I saw it as more than a fad and saw its potential uses in manufacturing.”

Insights and Opportunities to Scale Remanufacturing in Ireland
Key Takeaway: Facilitated by Agnese Metitieri (IMR) and with presentations from Damian Coughlan (UL), and Mark O’Sullivan (Iqutech), this workshop presented highlights from the Remanufacturing Insights Report and initiated discussions on the feasibility of remanufacturing for Irish businesses.

The Connected Smart Factory: IT/OT Architectures for Digital Transformation
Key Takeaway: This session attracted over 40 attendees eager to explore data governance and OT architecture trends. IMR’s Alan Kavanagh unveiled initiatives such as the IMR Industrial Digital Platform and the REVAMP R&D Project, inviting SMEs to collaborate while Daugirdis Stirby (IMR) and Marcus O’Mahony (UL) also made presentations.

FactoryXchange: Impactful Industry Services
Key Takeaway: Discussions emphasised sustainable practices, regulatory compliance, and innovation. Dermot Harrington’s HPLC solvent recycling system was a standout, and participants expressed interest in enhanced collaboration through FactoryXChange’s initiatives.

Attendee Feedback and Networking Success

The event received a stellar Net Promoter Score (NPS) of 75, with attendees praising the value of networking, learning from industry experts, and gaining insights into technological opportunities. Comments included:

  • “The member’s day provides a significant opportunity to get out of the plant and open my eyes to what is happening out there.”

The event featured 12 live demonstrations showcasing advancements in Robotics & Automation, CNC Machining & Data Connectivity, and Additive Manufacturing.

Robotics & Automation: From mobile robot communication to agile mobile robotics and advanced bin-picking solutions, attendees explored technologies enhancing workflow automation, flexibility, and material handling.

CNC Machining & Data Connectivity: Demonstrations included real-time data connectivity, high-precision micro-machining, and advanced scanning for metrology, enabling smarter operations and accurate quality control.

Additive Manufacturing: Highlights included multi-laser metal manufacturing, binder jetting for scalable metal production, and polymer additive solutions for lightweight precision components.

These demonstrations provided attendees with practical insights into technologies driving innovation and efficiency in manufacturing.
