What it is
The SLM 280 is a metal powder bed fusion machine that is capable of creating complex metallic components using a high-powered dual laser source.
With a build chamber of 280 x 280 x 365mm, it is can be leveraged for medium to high volume production applications.
The systems come equipped with a series of in process monitoring tools, open parameter editing and also has the ability to process novel alloys meaning it is an excellent development platform for Irish industries.
What it’s used for in IMR
The initial primary focus of the machine is to support the development of tooling solutions for Irish SME’s and MNC’s. The high build rate and level process controls mean that it can produce moulds for industrial applications in a proven manner.
The process monitoring capabilities of the system are being leveraged by IMR and it’s partners to developed out further process understanding.
It is being leveraged to develop out parameters for materials that are not yet widely available with the plan to move these to bespoke product applications.
